Description

It is always the dream of every town in the Philippines to have a “ Free Public Education” as answer to the need and right of every Filipino to have access to formal education.

The town of Matnog has long been dreaming of a public school and in 1989, it was finally realized. Matnog High School was established in line with R.A. 6655 – the establishment of Free Secondary School. The putting up of this school was a joint effort of the PTA, Deped Personnel and the Local Executive of Matnog with Honorable Emilio G. Ubaldo Sr. as the project initiator.

This institution started its educational operation with the following objectives: to develop the youth of Matnog to be productive, oriented and intellectually trained citizens – with abiding faith in God. It was also aimed at strenghtening the communication skills needed for self-expression and manipulative skills for gainful employment. Soon, every Matnogueño will be a contributor to the socio economic, cultural and physical growth and development of the community.

From a total of Six hundred thirty one (631) students in 1989, it increased to one thousand two hundred forty two (1,242) students after its seven years of operation. A slight decrease in enrolment was noted in school year 1994-1995 due to typhoon “Naning” that devastated the town on December 10, 1993. However, in the preceeding years, there was again a marked increase in enrolment when the school had fully implemented the different thrusts and programs launched by the Deped in which the people became aware of.

In 1989, Matnog High School had 15 teachers, 5 of whom were from Sorsogon National High School, 10 were newly hired and locally funded. Due to lack of teaching force, elementary teachers from Matnog Central School rendered their services to the school until 1990. In school year 1990-1991, the 5 deployed teachers were recalled to their original working station.

The need for more teachers was addressed in school year 1991-1992 when 25 new teachers were hired and the pioneer teachers who once were locally funded, were absorbed by the National Government Fund.

In 1989-1991, Matnog High School was under the administration and supervision of Mrs. Lilia Sta. Ana. She directed the then District Supervisor Mr. Jose Evasco, the Principal Mrs. Editha Masanque and Dr. Natividad U. Gavarra to administer and supervise the school, independently, whose duties, functions and responsibilities cover submitting reports, financial matters and coordination with the local officials as the need arises. Ms. Tesalonica G. Ubaldo was the administrator from 1991-1995, Ms. Odina Razo in 1995-1996, Ms. Flordeliza P. Gile in 1997-2006, Mr. Segundino Baltazar in 2007-2008, Ms. Gloria J. Brogada in 2008-2010, Ms. Ave Mendizabal in January,2010 to December, 2010, and again Ms. Tesalonica G. Ubaldo as the present school principal.

This institution was nationalized in 1991 and renamed as Matnog National High School.

Under the present organizational structure, Matnog National High School has 55 teaching and non-teaching personnel – 4 Department Heads, 4 Master Teachers in the different subject areas. The other designated school staff are the Supply Officer, School Guidance Councilor, Disbursinng officer, Budget Officer, Bookkeeper, and School Librarian. The job order employees are the School Clerk, Administrative Aid, Utility Aid, and the Watchmen.

As of now the school has a population of 2,086 students for school year 2011-2012. the physical plant of the school year is partially developed but still the school facilities are inadequate to meet the entire needs of the students and teachers.

Provide unlimited access to quality and relevant education through a curriculum for the youth's total intellectual, potential psychological, moral and spiritual environment awareness in line with the delivery of the services expected.
