Location
The Municipality of Daraga is located is the southwest portion of Albay province , this province being centrally located within the Bicol Region (Region V) which comprises the southern portion of the island in Luzon. The municipality is landlocked, lying less than five kilometers from the eastern coast of Albay Province and Albay Gulf. Daraga is bounded on the east by Legazpi City, on the west by the Municipality of Camalig and the Municipality of _____ and on the sought by the Province of Sorsogon.
It is located at the intersection of two national roads, one being the Manila South Road which enters the municipality centrally from the west and then traverses the center of the Municipality south from the Poblacion to Sorsogon: the other traversing the Poblacion from the west to east and then proceeding through Legazpi City and from there following the east coast of Albay northward. Its location adjoining Legazpi City is advantageous considering the fact that Legazpi City has been designated as the regional administrative center as the part of the Intergated Reorganization Plan of the national government.
Topography
The elevation of land within the Municipality varies from less than 20 meters in the lowland area of Poblacion and surrounding area to an elevation of 2,462 meters at the crater of the Mayon Volcano. The Poblacion is the foot of the volcano and the terrain slopes first gradually and more steeply to the north as it proceeds up the volcano. The lower slopes are suited to agriculture while the upper slopes are more forested.
The Poblacion is along the eastern boundary of the Municipality and the terrain is very flat with little slope to east through Legazpi City to Albay Gulf. To the west of the Poblacion the terrain gains elevation and is gently rolling to hilly. South of the Poblacion to the boundary of Sorsogon the terrain is gently rolling to hilly with limited flat land areas. The southwest corner of the municipality is much hillier and not as ideally suited to agriculture as is the ____ of the municipality.
The slopes of the volcano are characterized by thee numerous creeks and streams due to the off occurring rainfall on the upper reaches of the crater. The largest waterway in the municipality is the Yawa River which runs from west to east 1 kilometer north of the Poblacion.
